Reiki FAQs
Frequently asked questions about Reiki :
What is Reiki?
Reiki is an ancient form of hands-on healing that was re-discovered in Japan in the 1900s by Dr Mikao Usui. ‘Reiki’ is a Japanese term meaning ‘universal life force, energy’.
Dr Usui studied ancient texts for many years before he eventually discovered a text written in Sanskrit, which described the healing principles and symbols to be used in the healing. This gave him the theoretical knowledge, but it was only when Dr Usui received a direct experience of the energy (an ‘attunement’) after a period of fasting and meditating, that he was able to carry out healing himself.
During his lifetime, Dr Usui developed a system of three levels of teaching: Reiki I for anyone to learn for home use, Reiki II for those wishing to become Practitioners, and Reiki III for those wishing to teach Reiki. He also developed a systematic method of giving a Reiki healing treatment that can be followed to ensure a thorough and competent treatment, even by beginners.Reiki was brought to the west by Mrs Hawayo Takata in 1938. She started teaching Reiki in the USA and the Reiki Masters she taught have spread Reiki healing throughout USA, Europe and the rest of the world.
Can anyone learn Reiki?
Yes, Reiki is a very safe and easy healing system. You can easily learn the basics in one day, and start to practice it to benefit yourself, your family and friends.
How can I possibly learn how to heal in just one day?
Of course you can’t learn all about healing in one day. What you do learn is a safe, simple and effective system, which allows you to get started and give competent healing treatments to yourself, friends, family, pets, plants. Then you learn and develop through experience and continued training.
Will Reiki conflict with my beliefs?
Reiki is not about beliefs; it is an effective, practical healing system that can be used by anyone and will work for anyone, regardless of their beliefs. You may have your own theory or belief as to how Reiki or healing in general works and where this energy comes from, and this is fine.
What can learning Reiki do for me?
Reiki is very relaxing; it re-balances and restores your energies, enabling your body’s own natural healing processes to work more effectively. Once you have learned Reiki you can help yourself, whenever you need it and enjoy increasing benefits with daily use. You are also able to give your loved ones relaxing treatments, enjoying the satisfaction of being able to help them.
Why do I need a Reiki attunement – doesn’t everyone have healing abilities?
Everyone has natural, innate healing abilities – we are all made of energy and all have the ability to channel energy for healing. Some may have discovered a talent for healing and developed their own methods, othersmay have trained and developed through learning different energy healing systems.
Reiki is a healing system in which the energy is passed from Master to student via an attunement process. It is theoretically possible for someone to gain Reiki without an attunement, but this would be rare, and would still need guidance and training.
The wonderful fact is that Reiki, is in addition to any existing healing abilities or training you may have.
Can I learn Reiki while I am pregnant?
Yes, Reiki is completely safe and positively beneficial while pregnant.
Over the years, all the feedback I have received from women who’ve learned Reiki with me during their pregnancy shows that they tend to have an easier time giving birth and easier, happy peaceful babies !
There are no contraindications or side effects with Reiki.
Some Reiki I courses are 2 days, some are 1 day, why is this?
Originally Mrs Takata gave four attunements and taught Reiki I over 4 afternoons. Many Reiki Masters now give these four parts as one attunement and can therefore teach the course in one day.
Can I take Reiki I and II on the same weekend? Or is it better to allow some time between the two?
You can take the two courses together – you’ll get double the healing energies moving things through faster! You’ll still need the same amount of practice time to gain confidence and experience – this is no shortcut!
Some people prefer to wait before taking Reiki II, so that they can practice, build confidence and allow the Reiki I energies to integrate before they move to the next stage.
Some places teach Reiki I, II and III together, why don’t you do that?
I feel it would be a dis-service to anyone, to teach all three levels so fast and all together. You do need time to grow and develop on this spiritual healing path.
